Collaboration: Revised Skit Outlines

After recording our reference footage to compile to work on our timing, the studio decided that some of the improvised ideas we thought of during filming help establish the characters further and that the outline would consequently need revisiting.

Each character has a “beginning”, “middle”, and an “end” to their skit, and the film cuts between each date at these points (perhaps more than once during the “middle” section if the scene allows it) to show how they are progressing. In each beginning, Lucky’s date is introduced in a manner that establishes their personality and lead up to a point during which a brief freeze-frame will occur, followed by the girl’s name being written on the screen before cutting to the introduction of the next character. Each freeze-frame will be on a pose that captures the character’s personality/essence.

The girls are introduced in the order of Victoria, Cici, Skye, and then Penny. As the dates progress, Lucky seems to learn tidbits from the previous date where he did something wrong (the most prominent cases being that of manners such as pulling chairs out, taking the girl’s bag, and eating nicely.)

Victoria:
  • Beginning: As Lucky composes himself and sorts out his tie, Victoria walks onscreen behind him; he notices her and is impressed but fails to pick up on her cue that she’s waiting for him to pull her chair out for her to sit. She becomes increasingly impatient and ends up sitting herself down and is now irritated. The shot freezes on her with her arms folded and uptight-ness showing.
  • Middle: Victoria and Lucky are reading the menus to see what to order as the waiter arrives. Victoria goes to speak but is interrupted by Lucky as he insists they order a shared spaghetti meal (something Victoria perceives as rude and disgusting respectively). Their food arrives and Lucky is eager to begin sharing, but Victoria remains annoyed; a well-meaning Lucky nudge a meatball towards her with his fork but ends up splattering it onto her dress, immediately eliciting her rage.
  • End: Lucky panics and rushes to wipe it off but knocks the candle over in his hurry to appease her. Both characters watch as the candle slowly rolls off of the table and onto the floor, setting the tablecloth ablaze. Victoria is visibly furious.

Cici:
  • Beginning: Cici ambles onto the set, feeling her way to her seat and startling Lucky. He attempts to greet her with a wave but, unaware that she’s blind, is confused when she ignores him and continues wandering to her chair. Regardless, Lucky hurries to pull her chair out for her. Unfortunately, however, he pulls it out too far and Cici falls onto the floor, before clambering up onto the table, where the frame freezes.
  • Middle: Cici and Lucky are now ordering their meals. Cici is holding the menu upside down and, as she goes to order, Lucky turns it the right way up for her. Cici ends up pointing at an item on the menu that the waiter arches a brow at, before shortly returning with their food to see Cici feeling around the table (and Lucky’s face). Lucky is somewhat offput by her bizarre choice of food. He’s even more confused when Cici identifies her meal by sniffing it. They begin to tuck into their meal, and all seems (relatively) normal until Lucky spots a spider on the table.
  • End: Lucky tries and fails to swat the spider while simultaneously attempting to avoid drawing Cici’s attention; she remains blissfully unaware as it crawls towards her, and Lucky can only watch in horror as it crawls onto her plate and then her fork. Unable to do anything else for fear of wreaking further havoc, Lucky is forced to watch as Cici ends up eating the spider and Lucky ends up recoiling in disgust.

Skye:
  • Beginning: Skye strolls onscreen and Lucky is immediately taken aback by her height. Skye is oblivious to his otherwise incredibly obvious gawking up at her, taking the seat that he pulls out for her. Unfortunately, though it seemed to go right this time around, Lucky misses Skye holding her bag out for him to take and ends up failing to catch her belongings and straining himself in the process. Skye, meanwhile, is absent-mindedly taking in her surroundings and paying him no mind, before freeze-framing on a shot of her pulling a stray twig out of her hair.
  • Middle: The waiter brings their desserts out – Skye is evidently giddy as they are placed on the table. Lucky is preoccupied with his own dessert until Skye’s is placed before her, and, in the same fashion as in her introduction, ends up gawking at the height of the dessert. He can no longer see her face behind it and leans around to look at her and ends up falling from his chair.
  • End: In a bid to get back to his seat without drawing Skye’s attention, Lucky tries to clamber back up. Unfortunately, his clumsiness leads to him grabbing the tablecloth to haul himself up and dragging the unaware Skye’s dessert across the table and onto himself and the floor. Dazed, Lucky sits up, covered in dessert. Skye doesn’t seem to care as she plucks a cherry from the mess and plops it atop Lucky’s head; she leans back to observe her work, before dashing Lucky’s hopes with a disapproving shake of the head.

Penny:
  • Beginning: Penny approaches the table where a downtrodden Lucky is seated. Upon noticing her, he rushes to pull out her chair for her to sit and to take her bag. As Lucky returns to his chair, Penny reaches for the menu and knocks over the salt shaker. Lucky reaches over her shoulder to grab the menu for her, but their hands touch, and they gaze at each other for a moment before Penny’s superstitious attitude leads her to panicking and throwing the salt over her shoulder and directly into Lucky’s eyes, wherein the frame freezes.
  • Middle: Lucky is rubbing his now sore eyes, and Penny offers to show him the menu, pointing out what she’s going to order. Lucky, squinting, points at the same item which is what he also plans to order, but their fingers touch, and they share another glance. The waiter is irritated by both their gazing at each other and their lack of response when attempting to take the menus and pulls it out of their grip with a roll of the eyes. As they are eating, Lucky is trying his hardest to eat daintily and ends up pinging a pea onto Penny’s plate. Ultimately unfazed, Penny flicks it back, but it lands in the surprised Lucky’s mouth and he starts to choke.
  • End: Penny is panicking and looking around for help as Lucky continues to choke, and Lucky reacts by flailing his fists aimlessly onto the table. The pea dislodges itself as he slams his fist down onto his plate and sends it flying (food and all) onto Penny’s face. The plate slowly falls off, and Lucky, thinking he’s messed up his date for good, is shocked when Penny starts to giggle and throws some of the food at him in retaliation. This ends up with them in a food-fight and laughing together and the final shot is a freeze-frame of this.
